Human Sacrifice vs. Ritual Murder in The Lottery, by...
Imagine this; it is 9am, the sun is out and even though the children are playing , but before the day is done, someone will find themselves the winner of the lottery. However, it is not the lottery that most are familiar with. In 1988 author Judy Oppenheimer conducted an interview with author Shirley Jackson, the author of The Lottery . In this interview Shirley explained why she wrote the short story in the following excerpt ; I hoped, by setting a particularly brutal ancient rite in the present and in my own village to shock the storys readers with a graphic dramatization of the pointless violence and general inhumanity in their own lives (Oppenheimer 1988 ). In order to identify the key elements of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦7 ). At this point, the readers of the story may be thinking maybe someone is going to win a trip or something of that matter or perhaps even enough money to pay for all the souvenirs that they would be sending to their families and friend while on their summer vacation. It is possible, that the thought of someone winning a brand new shiny car could have crossed the mind of some other reader of the short story. Was this the case? Author Shirley Jackson makes a daunting effort to give the impression of everything in this small town being normal. She writes about some of the children of the story. Her efforts to depict the children doing what children do best, playing, added a simple twist to the story, and that same twist would soon shock the readers once they realize the purpose of the stones the young boys were playing with were actually going to be used to stone someone to death, but not just yet. One of the main characters of the story, Tessie Hutchinson, made her way to the lottery a little bit late, flustered and out of breath. She even admits to forgetting what day it was. However, despite all odds, she still made it on time (SparkNotes Editors ). At this point the author makes a humungous step in the sto ry that is intended to confuse the reader. Most readers would probably think , this must really be an important event ; Tessie must have been running or at least walking very fast, trying to make it to this

Tsa Policies Free Essays
As an aviation management major airport security is a concern that I have taken a huge interest in. Making travel safer to air travelers is one of the biggest tasks that will never end as long as there is a plane in the sky. However, there are many problems that come about when traveling because passengers feel as if they are being harassed, which doesnââ¬â¢t set a good look for the Transportation Security Administration. We will write a custom essay sample on Tsa Policies or any similar topic only for you Order Now The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) consist of 50,000 security officers, inspectors, directors, air marshals and managers who protect the nationââ¬â¢s transportation systems so you and your family can travel safely. They look for bombs at checkpoints in airports, they inspect rail cars, they patrol subways with our law enforcement partners, and they work to make all modes of transportation safe. Criminals and terrorists have been known to conceal items in private areas of the body, especially in the small of the back above the buttocks and high on the thigh. Screeners are to carefully inspect these areas during pat downs to adequately check for dangerous items. Also, underwire bras can set off magnetometers, and bras have been used to conceal dangerous items. One of the most intrusive and most controversial aspects of secondary screening is the use of pat-down inspections to check selected passengers or to resolve magnetometer alarms. Specific complaints over pat-down techniques have centered on allegations of inappropriate touching and unprofessional or rude conduct by screeners. More general complaints have focused on privacy concerns and perceptions that the pat-down procedures were intrusive and humiliating. A 2005, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) investigation and audit of pat-down screening procedures found that the TSA adequately advised passengers of their rights under the pat-down procedures, and appropriately accommodated those rights. The DHS also found that TSA screeners were adequately trained in pat down inspection procedures and, based on TSA records, additional screening procedures were performed on proportionate numbers of male and female passengers. Finally, the DHS found that the TSA had implemented procedures to investigate and resolve passenger complaints regarding the screening process. The TSA maintains a screening Performance Management Information System (PMIS) where recorded complaints are logged. Operations research analysis teams and federal security directors review complaints logged in the database to track trends and identify areas of concern and take appropriate actions, including possible disciplinary actions, to resolve specific issues. Complaints involving allegations of discrimination based on color, race, gender, religion, or national or ethnic origin are forwarded to the TSAââ¬â¢s Office of Civil Rights for further investigation. Despite considerable concern raised by some regarding inappropriate behavior during pat-down screening procedures, the DHS found no problems with the technique. Nonetheless, privacy groups, such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ALCU), continue to express concern over potential intrusion on individual rights and alleged cases of sexual harassment and abuse of passengers, particularly female passengers, by TSA screeners. These concerns, however, raise a significant challenge for the TSA: to maintain high levels of security, which require resolving all alarms and screening in detail those passengers ascertained to pose an elevated security risk, while maintaining the privacy rights and dignity of passengers identified for these secondary screening measures. While these technologies offer a potential alternative to pat-down screening techniques, they too, raise privacy concerns because the images generated by these systems can reveal private areas, physical characteristics that individuals may wish to keep private, as well as prosthetics and other assistive medical devices. In the fast-paced environment of the passenger checkpoint, pat-down searches may be rushed and certain areas may be overlooked. The difficulty in detecting threat items on passengers is compounded by the requirements to respect the privacy of individuals discussed above, as well as social and cultural norms and individual differences regarding interpersonal contact and expectations of privacy and modesty. Some have also noted cultural sensitivities toward handicapped and disabled individuals and point out that screeners are sometimes hesitant to perform intrusive searches, particularly on individuals wearing various prosthetics. Terrorists and criminals can and have exploited these aspects of individual privacy by concealing prohibited items in body cavities and near private areas of their bodies, and could also exploit a screenerââ¬â¢s reluctance to perform thorough searches of prosthetic devices. Covert testers also use these methods to conceal simulated threat items in an effort to test screenersââ¬â¢ abilities to detect items under real-world conditio ns and identify vulnerabilities in checkpoint screening that can potentially be reduced through procedural modifications and/or changes to screener training. These covert tests have revealed weaknesses in screener performance to detect weapons, simulated explosives, and components of explosive devices. How to cite Tsa Policies, Papers

The Difference Between Associate-Degree and Baccalaureate-Degree Nurses free essay sample
The profession is growing and expanding rapidly. Due to this growth, continuing nursing education is necessary. To determine the nursing education level that produces the best patient outcomes, it must first be decided whether there are differences between Associate-Degree and Baccalaureate-Degree Nurses, and what those differences are. The nurse prepared at an Associates level that passes the NCLEX, is called a nurse. How is an Associates level nurse educated? The associate RN program is about 2 years in length and primarily focuses on preparing to pass the NCLEX. This program does not include classes in leadership, health promotion, advanced critical thinking, or case management. These nurses can hold a variety of position throughout the community, including staff nurse, clinical lead, manager, educator, etc. For the Associates RN, there is a lot of pressure to return to school for higher education. The Nurses that hold a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is armed with the education and confidence needed to be a safe and efficient nurse. We will write a custom essay sample on The Difference Between Associate-Degree and Baccalaureate-Degree Nurses or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The BSN program is 4 years in length and includes all competencies learned at an Associates level. In addition, this program expands the nurseââ¬â¢s knowledge in areas of leadership, health promotion, advanced critical thinking, case management, research, social sciences, and humanities. ââ¬Å"The additional course work enhances the studentââ¬â¢s professional development, prepares the new nurse for a broader scope of practice, and provides the nurse with a better understanding of the cultural, political, economic, and social issues that affect patients and influence health care delivery. â⬠(Impact of education, 2011, para. ) An array of studies have been conducted that focus on the differences between and Associates RN and a BSN. One study by Giddens (2006) assessed the differences in physical examination techniques. This study found that level of education did not influence the head-to-toes assessment techniques. However, this study did not assess clinical interpretation or decision making skills. Another study, by Giger and Davidhizar (1990) assessed of ability of B SN and associate RNs in make the nursing diagnosis, implementing the plan, and evaluating the nursing process. The results showed that BSN nurses are more proficient in these areas than the Associate RN. ââ¬Å"Baccalaureate-degree nurses, in the study, were more concerned with research methodology, teaching, and individual, group and community assessmentâ⬠(Giger Davidhizar 1990). This study goes on the state, a trait of the BSN nurse is being more process oriented, while a trait of the Associates nurse is being more content driven. Being able to recognize the psycho-sociological needs of the patient occurred more readily in the BSN nurse. It is clear the bachelor degree is designed to prepares the nurse to be more self directed and autonomous. A patient care situation dealing with communication could be handled differently based on the educational preparation of the nurse. The BSN nurse had taken advanced classes in how to communicate effectively with a variety of people that have difference cultures, values, and spiritual beliefs. For example: There is a patient from India that is a practicing Hindu. This patient has specific times in which pray is required. The Associate RNââ¬â¢s training will lead him/her to assessing the tasks needed to deliver safe and efficient nursing care. This might be at the expense of the patientââ¬â¢s cultural and spiritual needs. Without the training needed to accurately assessment these needs, this RN is might not even realize they have been overlooked. With the BSN nurse, the assessment of cultural values and spiritual beliefs are part of the head to toes assessment. With both nurses, the patient will received the same medical care, but the BSN might provide a more holistic service for the patient. This is not to say that every BSN is a strong nurse than a nurse with their Associates, but the continuation of education can only add to the already wealth of knowledge the nurse has. From the time of birth, continuing to learn and grow is a basic human instinct. As adults, it is difficult to make that leap to continue ones education.

Legally Blonde The Female Ambition
The Womenââ¬â¢s Liberation movement of the twentieth century opened up a number of avenues for women. They were no longer confined to their homes and families and could go ahead and achieve whatever they wanted to. By the end of the twentieth century, women had made their mark as doctors and lawyers. And yet, despite all these outwardly achievements, on the inside women continued to aspire for a husband, children and a home in the suburbs.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Legally Blonde: The Female Ambition specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Even intelligent, successful women secretly aspired the same ideal that their mothers and grandmothers had fought so hard to get rid of. Popular media only fueled these aspirations by not only pointing out what they were missing but by even suggesting ways to get what they wanted. Movies like ââ¬Å"Legally Blondeâ⬠reinforce the idea that a womanââ¬â¢s primary object ive in life is to get a husband and get married and that a womanââ¬â¢s intelligence, capabilities and talents are of not much use if she cannot find herself a suitable husband. Elle Woods, played by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, is an extremely intelligent women who can get anything she wants once she sets her heart to it. Her natural intelligence is showcased on a number of occasions throughout the movie. She manages a score of 179 in LSATs and gets herself admitted to Harvard Law School with apparently only a little effort. And once she decides to apply herself, she out-performs her classmates. Elle Woods is a woman who can achieve anything she wants. Yet, the sole focus of her life is to get the man who had dumped her to realize his mistake and come back to her. Elle Woods is not an ordinary woman. But her ambitions and aspirations are that of a very ordinary woman and hence very limited. If Elleââ¬â¢s lack of ambition seems strange, her insistence on hiding her inte lligent mind behind a facade of expensive clothes and well manicured hands is downright bizarre. Elle does not dress like any ordinary woman. Instead, with her perfect hair, designer dresses and loud makeup, she looks more like a living Barbie. Elle is not a dumb blonde and yet that is exactly how she chooses to present herself to the world. According to Greenberg, female preoccupation with getting married may ââ¬Å"spring from some ââ¬Ënaturalââ¬â¢ feminine psychic thrust toward passive dependent gratificationâ⬠(Greenberg 151). Although Greenberg goes on to denounce this explanation and suggests that it may have something to do with women being disillusioned with their lives, this does not seem to be the case with Elle. She comes from a rich family and is a successful women in her own way. Yet, the only ambition of her life is to get married and become ââ¬Å"arm-candyâ⬠to a successful man. The movie seems to borrow from the desire of real women to get married to rich, successful man and exaggerates these desires to form Elleââ¬â¢s character. It is disturbing that in the post-feminist twenty-first century, real successful women still desire to get married ultimately.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Greenbergââ¬â¢s assertion that women may have a latent desire to be dependent on men may actually be a result of women being conditioned through such popular media to look for gratification through male dependency. The way Elle dresses and her preoccupation with her looks also furthers the popular image of women being frivolous. Of course Elleââ¬â¢s character is an exaggeration of all female frivolities but Elleââ¬â¢s Barbie like w ardrobe remains every womanââ¬â¢s dream. All over the US, women spend thousands of dollar on clothes, shoes and grooming so that they may look more like the models and actresses they see on television. In the last couple of decades, more and more women are choosing to go under the knife to achieve some imaginary perfect body. Characters like Elle Woods tell these women that such a perfection may actually be possible. Elleââ¬â¢s tailored, form hugging dresses, perfect blonde hair and high heeled shoes is an ideal that many women want to achieve. When the movie shows the beautiful and perfect Elle Woods is also an intelligent and successful lawyer, she becomes the ultimate role model for millions of women. According to Lancaster, ââ¬Å"fans appropriate images not as a way to feed into an ideologically created imageâ⬠¦ but [to] enter a liminoid fantasy world in order to help discover who they are in the everyday mundane worldâ⬠(Lancaster 127). If this is true, it is sa d that women should desire perfect, mythical bodies in order to help discover themselves. The other main female character in Legally Blonde, Vivian, is also intelligent and beautiful but not as preoccupied with her looks as Elle. Elle suggests that if she were to spend some more time on her grooming, she could become even more attractive since she was not all that ââ¬Å"unfortunate lookingâ⬠(Legally Blonde). In Elleââ¬â¢s world, being beautiful and intelligent is not enough. A women must also look attractive, since the ultimate aim of her existence is to get married. However, Warner dumps her because he needs to marry ââ¬Å"a Jackie, not a Marilynâ⬠(Legally Blonde). The practical looking Vivian apparently fulfills this need. While Elle was a great girlfriend, for a wife Warner prefers Vivian, not because he personally prefers Vivian over Elle, but because his voters might prefer the plainer Vivian. This is the same voter that ogles over Elleââ¬â¢s perfect body or aspires to get one like hers.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Legally Blonde: The Female Ambition specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More But these voters, just like Warner and Elleââ¬â¢s father see Elle as a dumb blonde and hence not a suitable partner for to someone who is expected to run the country. In achieving the perfect Barbie like persona that seems to be the female ideal, ironically, she alienates the very people who make it the female ideal. It is not that women have any biological or evolutionary need to be dependent on men. Yet, even in this modern post-feminist era, women continued to be preoccupied with finding a suitable husband. All the time and money that women spend on grooming themselves and the obsession with the perfect body is the result of this latent desire in every women, no matter how successful, to find a husband. Gomes discusses an interesting aspect of Confucianism which requires women to ââ¬Å"submit to patriarchyâ⬠(Gomes 139) and to know their ââ¬Å"place in society, and behave according to the ethical codes of general virtue: not talk too much, be clean and make herself beautiful to men, and be a good housekeeperâ⬠(Gomes 139). Although, Gomes is discussing a very eastern cultural trait, the fact is that women all over the world had been for centuries conditioned to submit to patriarchy and make themselves beautiful to men while being good housekeepers. The Womenââ¬â¢s Liberation movement of the last few decades has had only limited success in negating centuries of conditioning. Even today little girls play with Barbies, which become their role models for physical beauty, and are expected to have mock tea parties. It is no surprise than that when these girls grow up, they want to continue playing tea party hostesses dressed as Barbies. Female ambition, even in the twenty first century, is governed by centuries of indoctrination and furthered by movies like Legally Blonde that encourage women to spend more time on their looks, even when they are capable of a lot more. A movie is a mirror to the society and yet at the same time the society derives its inspirations from popular culture including movies. When the images propagated by the popular culture are as regressive as those seen in Legally Blonde, they slow down the process of change which is so vital for any societyââ¬â¢s growth. It is true that a movie is but an entertaining commentary on the realities of our times. However, they need to shake off the baggage of the past if the society as a whole is to truly modernize. And a modern society needs for women to have bigger and better ambitions than simply getting married an having children.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! Cash transfer and In
Cash transfer and In Cash transfer refers to payments of money made directly to eligible poor people, by state or federal government. This is done with an aim of reducing poverty through introduction of conditions towards the receiver. Only people who meet certain criteria benefit from the government money transfer and this ensures that ineligible people do not get the money. Cash transfer has significant benefit to people who might be enrolling children into public schools, receiving vaccinations, as well as undergoing regular medical check-ups.Advertising We will write a custom report sample on Cash transfer and In-Kind transfer specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Social contracts play a major role of transferring money from the government directly to poor families (Paglin Wood, 147). This provides the extremely poor families with cash to deal with emergencies, promoting long-term investments in human capital from paying the poor families to making good d ecisions. This means that the families ranking the poorest of the poor receive the cash and in return they send their children to school as well as exercising medical check-ups in clinics. In addition, through the Conditional Cash Transfer, there is enhancement of efficient human capita development within the family structure through discouragement of misguided beliefs which lead to inefficient decisions, such as sending only the boy-child to school. However, provision of cash transfer to improve school attendance has been criticized that it does not ensure higher academic performance and on the other hand, in terms of overall public health, mixed results are the major outcomes. This is a demonstration of lack a clear focus on the main target because bringing children to schools and clinics only provides a half solution as there is no guarantee for effective performance of these institutions (Paglin Wood, 147). On the other hand, in-kind transfer entails transfer of payments made b y governments and institutions to individuals in kind aimed at promoting their well-being. This is aimed at improving peopleââ¬â¢s living standards through provision of their necessities such as food and providing poor people with public housing, providing education through offering free schools, improving employment chances and free health services among others. Unlike cash transfer, in-kind transfer ensures that the aim of the government is achieved through provision of the goals rather than a mean of attaining those goals. The argument is that, where free services- for example education- are provided, more effective outcomes are achieved as mishandling of the money is avoided. In addition, in-kind transfer provides open field for expansion to needy people, such as employment chances which might be difficult to realize even with appropriate qualifications (Mankiw, 53). However, restrictions and lack of personal decisions accompanies this kind of transfer. Provision of free educ ation restricts people in choosing the school they would like or would prefer to attend. According to critics against in-kind transfer, provision of tuition vouchers or sums of money equivalent to the education, health or housing offered would give people an opportunity to choose their best (Mankiw, 53).Advertising Looking for report on business economics? Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More In a case study of food and money transfer in Bangladesh, wheat and rice transfer, (both to poor household and for education), and cash transfer were provided to the people. Food transfer showed much more consumption of the food than in cases where cash transfer was employed. To those groups that participated in money transfer, only fifty percent was recorded to have been used in food consumption, unlike total food consumption on the groups where food transfer was exercised. However on the second period of transfer, the house holds that received food transfer on the previous exercise was on average poorer that the others, with 95 per cent of consumption and per capital expenditure while the other households had 85 per cent of the same ((Paglin Wood, 211). Though the consumption is evidently higher in in-kind transfer, providing of cash transfer in my country can be more appropriate. In-kind transfer increases consumption due to unavailable of multiple choices but cash transfer will give people opportunity to not only decide on what to chose but also on how to use. In conclusion, cash and in-kind transfer are welfare systems that have benefited persons in countries where they are practiced, such as the United State. Both have contributed to improvement of peopleââ¬â¢s welfare as well as human capital. However some constrain within their operation do hinder their maximum effectiveness in meeting their goals. This is so because when they focus on perfecting one side of peopleââ¬â¢s life, other systems affe cts their efficiency on the other side. The cash transfer offers people an opportunity of choosing as they determine what school, clinic and food to use. On the other side, maximum consumption of transfer is realized where in-kind transfer is employed though peopleââ¬â¢s choice is limited. Mankiw, Gregory N. Principles of microeconomics. Rembrandts Work in the Light of Contemporary Artists Case Study
Rembrandts Work in the Light of Contemporary Artists - Case Study Example Many contemporary writers have written on Rembrandt; however, Gary Schwartzââ¬â¢s work stands out. The Rembrandt Book, which was published in honour of the 400th anniversary of Rembrandtââ¬â¢s birth, the book gives the reader an opportunity to comprehend his life as it was. One familiarizes themselves through the book with Rembrandtââ¬â¢s family, friends, patrons, and European civilization and present day culture. Each chapter of the book allows one to have a sneak peek into Rembrandtââ¬â¢s creative thought process. Gary Schwartz has used contemporary sources to assimilate information in the book on Rembrandt. Rembrandt received a thorough grounding in classical and biblical studies. In 1629, Rembrandt painted a self-portrait which is regarded as first of the many that would follow. Rembrandtââ¬â¢s life wasnââ¬â¢t devoid of difficulties and problems. In fact, he led a plain tans life for the longest time. In spite of getting married by 1634, he had an illegitimate d aughter, Cornelia. Eventually, when Rembrandt is reported to be in deep financial trouble and declared him as an insolvent in 1656, the authorities in Amsterdam compiled a minutely detailed inventory of his possessions. Many documents were compiled out of which, one document is said to state the providence of a list with two plaster casts of children, one plaster head, five works by other artists and four of his own paintings and one shoe. Rembrandt led an extremely colourful life rich with drama and suspense and thrilling in its own right.
